Cultural and ecological region within Central America but with a northern boundary within central Mexico. The fluidity of boundaries here, as elsewhere, militate against drawing absolute distinctions. For example, if “Central America” is open to cross-fertilization to the north and south, so too is Mesoamerica. The Yaqui (Yoeme) and Huichol (Wixáritari) exemplify cultural and geographic border crossings.
